Just one year after the success of the Bora, Maserati’s flagship car, the Merak was introduced at the Paris Motor Show in 1972. The Merak was a smaller sports car carrying a longitudinal V6 amidship and with a 2+2 configuration, known as the “Baby Bora”. The Merak was introduced as a direct competitor to the Lamborghini Urraco and Ferrari’s Dino 308 GT4. Giugiaro was commissioned to design the Merak after his success with the visually stunning Bora. The new smaller sports car resembled the Bora from the front all the way back to the doors. In March 1976 at the Geneva Motor Show, Maserati unveiled the Merak SS. A lighter more powerful Merak now sharing the dashboard configuration of the Bora, carried a 220hp V6 and more conventional clutch and brake system.  With less than 1000 SS Merak’s ever produced and being the most desired of the two models, these rare Italian thoroughbreds make a perfect alternative to its Ferrari and Lamborghini counterparts.
